Dear Sir

Last week I sent Mr Low’s M.S. to Mr Cadel & hope it will find its way safely to you. I wish him a safe voyage & success. I caused his drawing of the bird catching in orkney to be done over again by an elegant hand & have put it to the engraver. It is finely retouched but with great fidelity.

I truely lament the probable fate of my worthy friend Ramsay but hope a better account of him.

Under the rose I beg the pedigree of the Earl of Fife’s family: I mean only to the gran father1 who I believe was its founder. By what means the wealth was acquired & whether this man or his father was made the irish Peer. who was also Braco Duff?2 all that you say shall be kept a total secret.

I am
Dr Sir yr faithful humble Servt

Tho. Pennant.

July 14th 1778.

1. William Duff, earl of Fife and Lord Braco of Kilbryde.
2. Possibly a reference to William Duff, earl of Fife's alternative title of Lord Braco, or to the cousin whom he succeeded to the latter title.
