Notes:

Transcribed from a volume of scribal copies of Pennant's original letters to David Skene. The copies are likely the work of Alexander Thomson, who on his death in 1868, bequeathed the collection to Aberdeen University Library. See Colin A. McLaren, ‘Reports and surveys of archives in northern Scotland’ in Northern Scotland: A Historical Journal, Volume 1 (1972), pp.115-125.

Dear Sir

I forget how the epistolary debts are between us but for fear of error on my side write to enquire how your health, and what acquisitions you make in your collection. I have had your molluscs drawn; and wish much for one of those long-legged sea insects to preserve it by a figure. When you and Mr. Oglevie have settled the address of the box I am to send, I will do my best to collect our ores, &c. for you. I cannot get the snake yet: it would make a good figure in my Tour, could it be procured but let me beg its description. Have you yet got my icons of Br. An. 1

I am Dear Sir
your faithful humble Servant

Tho. Pennant

May 22nd. 1770.
