Dear Sir

Whatsoever tumults rage, the correspondence of a friend gives some relief. I rejoice at the plenty of the orknies: we have much to boast here both of the plenty & the favorableness of the season: but for who we have reaped, heaven alone knows.

you must know that Ld Fife has served a poor man such a trick that is perhaps to you not amazing. he promised Mr Cordiner a plate of Duff house, & when it came to be payed for, refused doing it. It came to 10 guineas, Which I payed rather than it shd fall on the poor divine. I mean not to publish any of the anecdotes of this irish peer; but am glad to be acquainted with his merits. Is the forged charter extant?

I wander to a very different subject when I ask the day month & year of the worthy Duke of Athols death.
