Dear Sir

I have now almost finished my errand; & as I shall be able to set my face towards Wales next week, hope to hear from you next month; or rather by the 5th of it when I trust I shall be restored to my studies.

The extracts relating to Athol will be of much use to me.

a minute list of the Parishes in Edinburgh, also the number of its inhabitants if lately computed.

The appendix to my octavo editions of the Tour 1769 with the plates of the quarto will be soon published. I consign it to Mr White, so beg you would desire Mr Balfour to apply to him. These additions make a volume of between one & two hundred pages.

At present nothing new occurs.

I am
Dear Sir
yr faithfull humble Servt

Tho. Pennant.

Near London Septr 17th 1774.

As I wish very much that the clergy of Scotland may know how much I befriend them & with what candour I treat them, I wish you would get quoted in the magazine with a proper preamble an extract from my voyage p.135. my observation on the bad condition of the scotch churches & that quote, from

"It is but common justice &c1

Editorial notes

1. Confusingly, the page reference given by Pennant seems to correspond to his account of the Scottish clergy in A tour in Scotland 1769 (1771), while the quote is from a passage in A tour in Scotland and voyage to the Hebrides 1772 (1774), p.154.
