Dear Sir,

In respect to the account of the Macleane’s if you can give the abstract of the extent of their dominions when in their Glory, the means how they came by Mull, what sieges the castles of Aros, Duwart or Donen sustained; or the fort on the little isle of Carnbergh. I shall be glad to know; for as my Tour is just finished I shall also finish my queries for some weeks, & give myself a holyday after my Long labor.1 The sooner the above arrive the more welcome to

Dr Sir
yr obedt. Servt

Tho. Pennant

Downing. Jan 30th. 1774.

Editorial notes

1. The first edition of Pennant's Tour in Scotland and Hebrides 1772 was published in 1774. However Pennant's ongoing queries in this letter relating to the history of the Hebrides, suggest that the finished work referred to above was the revised Tour in Scotland 1769, 3rd edn. (Warrington: 1774).
