Dear Sir

yr notes are most acceptable; & I here & there picked out something of great use.

I never heard before a syllable of E. Buchan: but do suppose I am.

Mr Low must not think of leaving orkney next spring. for to the Shetlands he must go if I can prevale: I propose (self & co) to advance a small sum equal such a little voyage. I have written to him. I have not yet had the parcel from Mc Macgovan.

Some abstract from No 143 of the Genealogy of the chief clans of the Isles by rev Sir Donald Monro. will be of much use to me.

I suppose the next number has been rendred [sic] into Latin by Buchanan.1

I am Dear Sir
Yrs truely

Tho. Pennant.

Pray how do Sherriff deputes proceed in their courts: for example in Skie. do they summon juries? how far does their power extend in civil or In criminal causes in distant parts such as Skie Lewis &c. Be so good as to consult some gentlemen of the Law.

Is there coal in Airshire & does it pay a duty if carried to arran or Bute?

Editorial notes

1. Pennant is probably referring to George Buchanans's 1582 Rerum Scoticarum Historia, which incorporated material by Monro.
