Dear Sir

I must beg of you to send the 6 copies of the 2d vol. of your dictionary to Mr Faulder’s who will pay for them. Pray repeat it as often as a volume comes out.

In my calamitous journey to town I had not leisure to see you which I regret. let me trouble you with two requests. You knew Mr [sic] Mr Lloyd of Caerwis. I undertook to serve his widow & ten children in all I could, & have been successful in raising a subscription of near 200£. The 2d daughter is too old to be put out apprentice: she is above 22 years old but has been so well educated as to be very capable of being a teacher in any of the great boarding schools. She is sensible well disposed & has been educated at chester school. I shall be extremely obliged to you for enquiring at any of the great schools, & you will do a truely charitable deed.

I am most desirous of getting into our welsh school Grays inn lane the child of which a note is inclosed.1 I do not know any one of the school, nor do I know the rules. I gave the charity 100£ for which I never received the lest complimt or civility. A Mr Richd Jones once said he wd send me a governors staff. but my grateful countrymen thought me unworthy of it. I [sic]

yr faithful Servt

Th. Pennant

Editorial notes

1. The enclosure is not preserved with the letter. Minutes of the Welsh School show that children were admitted through election by ballot, following recommendation by petition. Meetings around this date do not record any recommendations made by Pennant, but note that no recommenders are named in the minutes for 2 February 1795, which may signal an omission in the records for that date. NLW, Welsh School, Minute book 1778–1796, 5 November 1794, 5 January, 2 February, 9 March 1795.
2. The signature is inserted in another hand, the original having been cut out by a collector.
