Dear Sir

I really agree with you in the propriety of sending down the M.S. Moses can do the drawings much better on the margin than on loose papers. He shall alter the obscurity about the Earls of Northampton & Arundel2 in a neat manner. I can give you prints of some english birds which you may [...] paste as you please.

I am very much obliged to you for the accounts of the fo[...]rests: but I still stick at Emsworth for want of this new map of Hampshire.3

I thank you for the very curious bill of fare given by my catch penny pirate of London.4 it really diverts me much.

You & I shall probable interfere in du[...]tch Adm. & captains mentioned or to be mentioned by me in the bloody fights of last century. I therefore ask for none of them: but I shall thank you much for Heemskirk who fell before Gibraltar in 1607.

Let me trouble you to send in yr parcel two dozen of the best black lead pencils, not very slenders ones. This you will say prognosticates a welsh residence during this season: which it certainly does. I shall make it up next year by doubling my time.

I have as much as is printed of the Zoological ^part of the arctic Zoology5 for you & for myself. Moses shall begin on[...] them as soon as he has finished Mr Storer's orders which will be very soon.

Inclosed are some more of the Edinburgh barber's work. the Tragedy Hero & heroine are not amiss. If I send duplicates Pray present them to Mr storer.

Adieu Yrs most truely

T. Pennant.

my complimts attend [...] General Rainsford.

Whatever you favor me with may come with yr M.S. by the coach at the Golden cross Charing cross. directed to be left at the office Chester. They will come [...]safer than by mazel.

Editorial notes

1. The year, 1791, may have been added later by Richard Bull.
2. For this issue relating to Henry Howard, earl of Northampton, and Thomas Howard, earl of Arundel, see 1123, n. 1.
3. The map awaited by Pennant was to be produced by William Faden. See 1099.
4. This enclosure has not survived with the manuscript letter.
5. This probably refers to the early stages of printing the second edition of Arctic zoology.
