Dear Sir

Inclosed is an order for the L. P. prints of the journey to London. the letter press is on its road to this place & shall be done for you with all dispatch. You may depend on yr Snowdon's reaching stratton street in five weeks, also above eight views in Chester.1

Let me congratulate you on the good news which I hope will be a strong persuasion to peace with our inveterate enemies.2 It inspirits every body as it flatters us that the scale is turning in our favor. We are rather shocked at the national ingratitude oin the recall of Rodney3 who had before done so much for us & given some lustre to our tarnished flag. An engraver sent me some political prints; but so stupid that I must send them to their proper place. I hear of a Dame Rat & her little ones. if the last does not exceed 1s. pray favor me with it. My best Complimts attend the Ladies.4

I am
Dear Sir,
faithfully yrs

Tho.. Pennant

Editorial notes

1. Pennant's extra-illustrated copy of A tour in Wales 1770 [1773] (1778) is particularly rich in watercolour drawings by Moses Griffith relating to Chester, with churches and the various gates in the city's Roman walls featuring strongly. Copies of some of these may have been sent to Bull to facilitate his efforts to extra-illustrate a bespoke version of this work.
2. A reference to British victory at the Battle of the Saints, 9–12 April 1782.
3. George Bridges Rodney, first Baron Rodney (bap. 1718, d. 1792), was replaced in his position as commander-in-chief in the Leeward Islands before news reached Britain of his victory at the Battle of the Saints. ODNB.
4. Pennant refers to Bull's daughters, Elizabeth and Catherine, and also, possibly, to his step-daughter Levinia Luther.
