Dear Sir

as I have one more Frank I shall forbear this post Mr Jackson’s indulgence. It is pity the author of the antiquities of Sterling does not print them separate.1 I am pleased with the remarks on Johnson but shall make no use of them; nor shall I once mention him; for really he is not worth notice.2 Be so good as to forward the inclosed.

I am Dear Sir
yr most obedt. Servt

Tho. Pennant

Editorial notes

1. Originally printed as a series in The Edinburgh Magazine and Review from 1773 and 1774, William Nimmo's 'Antiquities in Stirlingshire' would eventually be published separately as A general history of Stirlingshire (1777).
2. Pennant may be referring to a recent contribution to The St. James Chronicle for 18 February 1775. Entitled 'Sketch of a Comparison between the two late Writers of Travels in SCOTLAND' and signed 'STAFFA', the piece favourably compares Pennant's account of Scotland to Johnson's.
