Sir

your two favors came safe to hand: Please to attribute my silence to my daily expectation of the last. I am much obliged to you for the drawing which shall be engraven with proper acknowledgements for my scotch tour. Would that the Lyre from the orknies may prove new & come in time to embellish my book.1 I have perused yr list of birds but do not find any new except the little Snipe.

I am very sorry I left London before I could have the pleasure of enjoying the acquaintance of Mrs Fordyce & MrsFlemming

I am in great hopes yr correspondence abroad will be productive of great matters. I beg to know how the publick museum goes on, & whether my good friend the Professor of N. H. has regained his health. Be so good as to make my complmints [sic] to Doctor Hope & let him know that the long delay of his friends not sending & paying for the fine copy of the Br. Zool. is both a loss & trouble to Mr Morris. ever happy to hear from you

I am
Sir
your obliged humble Servt

Tho. Pennant

Editorial notes

1. The work which Pennant has in mind here is probably Tour in Scotland in 1769 (1771), although no such drawing appears in that volume. On the identification of the bird see Pennant's letter to George Paton on 13th December 1771.
